Purchased item from EU which was faulty. How to reclaim refund on import VAT

Hello all,
I purchased an item from within the EU and after opening it, it is unfortunately damaged. When the parcel entered the UK, I was charged about £40 in fees (VAT and ParcelForce fees).
Whilst I am ready to send the item back to the seller for a refund, can anyone please advise how I go about getting a refund on the VAT and ParcelForce fees I paid please to ParcelForce? I paid all of this to ParcelForce when I collected the item from their depot. Looking at the ParcelForce website, there is no mention of what to do in these situations.
Thanks!

It'll be HMRC you claim it from, there have been some other threads about it (don't think the process is particularly user-friendly for consumers).0

As mentioned above you need to reclaim the VAT (and duty) from HMRC, you will need proof of return, you cannot reclaim the fees.0
-
Check with HM Customs before sending it as you need information from the original customs slip.0
