Genoa Flight Cancelled - hundreds of pounds wasted

Genoa Flight Cancelled - money wasted

Hi - 3 of us had booked a weekend in Genoa via EDreams for Geno - flying from Stansted.
The flights were cheap but we paid upfront £100 each for Tests, £150 each for Hotels and £40 each for Football Tickets.
24 hours before the flight (and after doing our Tests) - Ryanair have told us the flights are cancelled due to an Airport Staff Strike in Genoa on Friday.
The only alternative flights to Genoa are on Monday - which is useless.
We have looked at alternative flights with a view to flying elsewhere and getting a train. Nothing less than £60 each on Friday for flights alone and we would need to retest.
Furious not the word. We dont have travel insurance - is there any way we can claim back for the costs we have incurred?

  • you'd need to check the T&C's of each booking (Flight/Hotel/Football) to see if they have a cancellation policy.

this is a prime reason why you should always have travel insurance in place as soon as you book (hindsight's a wonderful thing I know!).

If paid by credit card there may also be an slim chance you could claim back but wouldn't get any hopes up. Best case (in my opinion), you get the money for the flights back and loose everything else.

You should get a refund for the cancelled flight.

If you booked non refundable rooms then it is unlikely the hotel will refund.

Similarly, it is unlikely the football tickets are refundable.

There won't be any refund for the tests as again they have been supplied.

Credit card would not cover as the hotel and the match are  available.

Only possibility would have been travel insurance, if you were covered for consequential losses.

Sorry, but it looks like you either fork out for new travel or lose your money, apart from the flight costs.

  • I sadly expected this to be the case :( . cheers folks

You should get a refund for the flight but as the cancellation is due to a strike by people other than RyanAirs staff its very limited what they owe you and this is why you need to buy travel insurance.
  • Have you checked flights from STN to Milan?

There are two tomorrow priced at £16 return.

You have a right to a refund or re-routing. If Ryanair are not operating suitable alternative flights they are obliged to pay for you to take flights operated by another carrier and for the train tickets necessary to complete your journey.

I cannot see why you would need to test again.

If it had been Ryanair’s personnel like cabincrew or pilots are on strike, you would be entitled to compensation from Ryanair.

However  the EU regulation covering compensation for cancelled or delayed flights does not apply if the cancellation is caused by Third parties (outside parties of which the airline is not in control )

This means that you are not entitled to compensation from Ryanair because the flight has been cancelled  due to  strike by Genoa airport staff strike - out of Ryanair’s control .

Can I just ask what is so appealing about a match between Genoa and Hellas Verona?

That is absolutely true, but the right to a full refund OR RE-ROUTING still applies.
