  • Having had leasehold properties, i would like to know the freeholders attitude before altering the car port.

    Most likely, the freeholders don't care what you do, so long as you pay for the privilege of doing it.

    They are likely to charge for permission to do the work.  If the work increases the value of the house, they may even want a payment for that.  The latter makes no real sense, but it's often written into the lease anyway.
    If it sticks, force it.
    If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
