Is my gas switched off somehow?

Hi, I recently completed on my property (built late 90s), I've been busy cleaning it up and getting things sorted so haven't been living in it. Its been empty since at least April.
I contacted all utilities( British gas being the electricity and gas supplier) the day after taking ownership.

I've not fired the boiler yet, there's 2 plumbing jobs needing doing so I've got someone booked in for those and a boiler service so thought I'd leave it alone.
Anyway today I tried boiling a pan of water, a brief hiss came out of the hob and nothing more, tried a different one and same result!
I popped out to the meter to have a look and it seems to me the gas is switched on, so I'm stumped, it obviously worked recently with this little hisses of it from the hob. Have I missed something?
Here's a pic of meter, can't think it's of much use but maybe it does actually say it's off? I always thought you had to pull the handle 90 deg though, in an emergency..

It certainly looks like it's in the "on" position. But the symptoms you describe do sound like the bit of gas that came out was what was just left in the pipes.Have you tried rotating the shutoff lever through 90 degrees? I'm just wondering whether possibly the previous residents shut off the gas when they left (pretty sensible), removed the lever and put it back on in the upright position to allow the meter cupboard door to shut - if you get what I mean. So it could actually be in the "off" position. Worth a try I would have thought.2

As above, try turning it, and see if there is a valve where the gas feeds the hob1

Sounds like BG capped the supply until the new resident sets up the account. Perhaps worth calling BG to clarify.2

Could it be a safety cutout on the hob if the gas isn't lit?

You need an electric connection to ignite the hob.
Is that on/in place/connected?
I had to use a standard gas lighter for mine until all was sorted. You could try that to see if it's gas or electric that's the problemI can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Great suggestions, it is very possible I didn't have the electric switch for the oven switched on and some sort of safety feature. I'll try again and report back. Thanks to everyone for replying, bit of luck it's as simple as that!0

Search for the instructions online if you don't have any.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1

You will need to get Cadent to do a live/dead check .. not BG. Either call them or fill in the form

Any chance the hose with bayonet connector is disconnected?

A very easy fix, it was a safety feature stopping too much gas coming out. Thanks for all your help everyone.5
