Cannot register with websites that use TransUnion.

Hi all.

I registered with MSE Credit Club (Experian) and Clear Score (Equifax) without any problems at all, however, when trying to register at Credit Karma or Credit Monitor (TransUnion), the process fails due to not being able to verify my identity.

I contaced Credit Karma but nothing they did made any difference.

I contacted TransUnion directly but they weren't able to help either. They sent me a report but all it consisted of were my personal details (name, address, etc.) and when bank accounts were created.

Has anyone else had any problems registering with any website using TransUnion and if so, does anybody have any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Thanks for any assistance.

If they cannot verify your identity, surely there must be a mechanism with which to supply ID to them ?

Do any instructions pop up ?

Thank you for your reply, sourcrates.

I do not remember anything useful popping up. During this whole issue, I don't think anybody's asked for alternative ID. My main concern is not so much that they can't verify my ID per se but they hold incorrect information about me that does not match the answers I provide during the registration process and this could affect applying for a credit card, for example, if the info they hold is not favourable.

I can make your suggestion and if successful, I think the only way would be to sign up directly with TransUnion to get a full report to check what inaccurate info they have about me and then cancel during the free period, which I didn't want to go the trouble of having to do.

You you can order a free statutory credit report from any of the three credit reporting agencies. You do not need to cancel anything as this is not the same as the free 30 day trial.

However, you may still have the same issues with them validating your iD.

PS. Their Ts & Cs say that if they cannot verify your ID online, you can request your statutory report by writing to them at an address given on the Ts £ Cs.

I agree that you should request a copy of your statutory credit report - this is effectively the same as submitting a DSAR under GDPR which TransUnion are legally obliged to respond to within 1 calendar month. If there are any issues they should have a formal process to request ID and verify you.

It's also possible though that none of the credit accounts you hold report to TransUnion, which could explain why there were no accounts on your files from them, assuming what they have provided you is actually a credit report.

    Thank you for your replies.

What I received in the mail is a 'credit file', has 'Limited Subject Access Request' on the front and the covering letter states "your report shows all the information we hold about you at the address you gave us'.

Is this different to the 'statutory report'?

If this is 'all' the info they have on me and it's all accurate, where could the info be coming from that doesn't match my answers when registering? I have no other accounts or dealings with any other financial organisations.

    Thanks.

Yesterday, I requested a Transunion statutory credit report online, and they did ask a number of questions. For example:

"our records show you opened a bank account in July 2015. Was it with a) Barclays, b) Lloyds etc"

They then emailed me the report as a PDF attachment. The email heading was "View your TransUnion Credit Report"

The report was a full credit report with account details, balances, searches etc.

If it doesn't say Credit Report then I guess it isn't.

I tried and failed to sign up as I failed the id.

They were asking when I ‘last’ took out a phone contract - is that my original contract over 20 years ago, or the extra contract when I added an additional phone for my mother some years later? I will never know.
Another question was when I last opened a bank account. It had been in the previous month. With the benefit of hindsight I now realise this was too soon to be on their reports.

Another question referred to HP. I didn’t realise that my HP purchase of a car some years ago wasn’t  actually HP .. and so it went on..
I tried and tried with various combinations of answers depending on the interpretation of the questions before ultimate giving up !

However I was able to get a credit report from one of the other agencies and that gave me all the missing answers. By then I was so pee’d off I didn’t bother.

I had great trouble getting access to my transunion data through clearscore - clearscore blanked me out and fobbed me off with 'sorry we can't help you - we cannot grant you access to your credit file information' even though I'd uploaded copies of driving licenses and passports, and answered their security questions about my accounts.  I would try contacting them every couple of months - and still couldn't get it, there was some 'marker' against my name, so that whenever I tried to sign up, I'd be automatically declined access.

I eventually started commenting on their social media posts, asking publicly as to why I wasn't able to access my reports - initially again I was fobbed off - but I didn't give up, I recall that I wrote them a message along the lines of 'I've been trying to get access to my reports for over a year, I've sent you my passport details, my driving license details, I've verified my accounts through your security questionnaires - there must be something somebody can do to resolve this issue' - and whatever the marker was, was removed, and they told me to try registration again.

I correctly answered my 'security' questions (as I had done previously) and I was in. It was a hard slog, and it felt like nobody was listening/paying attention/willing to resolve the problem. So - don't give up - even if they say there's nothing more they can do.

    cymruchris Do you mean Clearscore?

Clearscore collect all of their data from Equifax, not Transunion.

Kudos though for persevering and getting it sorted.

You’re right ! My error - it was ClearScore / equifax - not transunion - so although not directly helpful - the message might be the same - which is don’t give up and keep up the pressure to resolve the problem.
