I used a sort of booker/agent type company earlier this year for Spanish car hire. The deal they got me was actually with Avis but was well below Avis' advertised rates. The site is painless to use and I had no problems at all.
The site is www.auto-europe.co.uk
P.S. I've no link to them other than the fact I used them to hire a car from Malaga airport earlier this year.

I work for a company that sends me all over Europe all the time and I have to book car hire about 20 times a year. It's normally booked for me by one our pa's but I went to Marbella on holiday in September and asked my pa which company was the best to use and she told me to check out the following information as she had used lot's of different ones and found they were all different.
Check that the company that you are booking through alows you to pick it up at the airport. I was flying to Malaga and found that most of the companies made me go and get a bus to their cars. This would have addded about an hour to by trip. I wanted one that I could walk to. I found that www.holidayautos.co.uk had cars there. Nice and easy, they emailed me the confirmation .
She told me to check that there was unlimited mileage included as we wanted to go to Seville and it was quite a long round trip. Again holidayautos did this.
She also told me that she always had trouble at high season getting the size of car that we wanted. She found it easier to book through a brooker around Xmas or Ski. Her top tip was that if you went to a search site like travelsupermarket, then do a search, find a price that you like and then see if the company had an advert on the page. If it does then click that rather than the list as they can be cheaper (all these search sites get paid to have people in the list and this can get passed on to you). This was how I found the holiday autos page and I got a good price. At first I was going to book the chepaest one on the list but they wanted to charge me for extra insurance and I managed to get a better car for cheaper.0
