Problems with laptop mains

I use a Medion laptop which is 8 years old and only use the mains to use it. The mains power only works when the jack is plugged in a couple of angles. Otherwise it uses the battery. Sometimes, I just need to move the laptop ever so slightly and the mains gets knocked off and on battery. It takes several attempts for me to move the power cable so its on mains and when I do, mains power lasts about a second before it gets knocked out again. It's also not the same few angles

Is there a problem with the power pack jack or the socket inside the laptop? I have got nothing else to compare or to test with. How much does it cost to replace the latter in a shop?

Just use the laptop to do stuff on the internet, upload music and a few Office documents.

    Probably.

Getting an alternative power cable would be the first thing to check.

On the balance of probabilities the likely cause is the d.c. power cable to the jack plug. One of the internal wires has probably got an intermittent stress fracture where the cable enters the body of the jack-plug. Anyone with a volt-meter (multimeter) would quickly be able to identify whether the cable was in sound condition, or not. i.e. monitor the output and jiggle the cable!

If not a faulty power cable it could well be the DC power socket inside the laptop that’s intermittently faulty,...dodgy connections, cracked casing etc;...but eliminate the power cable first.

I’d assume?? that a new Medion laptop power adaptor for your model would be readily (and cheaply) available on Amazon/eBay etc.

Replacing the power adaptor is easy;...replacing the DC power socket is a different ballgame altogether. Some laptops are easier than others, but whichever laptop you own it means disassembly, I’m afraid. 😓

This is normally caused by one of two things, either the power pin on the charge is broken or the power pin on the laptop is broken.  If you take the charger out and look at the metal charging pin it should stick out straight from the casing.  If it doesn't, then its broken and a new charger will be needed.  This will be cheaper than replacing the pin on the laptop which may be a piece of cake to fix (relatively speaking) or involve a spot of soldering if its on the main board.

I can't say it's the case for Medion laptops by the charging socket failed on my HP laptop, a replacement was easily found on Amazon for £4 and just plugged in to the main board, a very easy fix.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

All brands to an extent use a mix and match in terms of power pin placement.  Some are on separate cables, some are soldered to the board.
Medion is rebranded Lenovo these days, has been for the last decade or so since they bought the company.

Pins on a cable are cheap, (relatively) quick and easy to replace.  Pins on the board are a PITA because they'll need resoldering to said board.  Never as strong as it would have been when the board was manufactured.

Over the years with Acer laptops the problem has usually been needing a new charger rather than the charging port being faulty.

I've had one instance of the latter and many of the former.

One of my sons had a Medion Akoya laptop (purchased 2010) and the charger port became faulty within the 3 year warranty period. The unit was returned to Medion (Swindon I recall) and repaired without quibble. We always suspected that this was an issue with this particular model of laptop, which incidentally was superb. Personally and just a further observation, I have used Medion desktops for years and find them to be extremely robust and reliable.
