External bifold door latch not working

I’ve just come to shut the bifold door and the handle would only go so far before getting stuck. I had a quick look at the protruding rod at the bottom and this seemed ok, the one at the top was struggling to travel through the plastic ‘guide’. I took this off and the door latch closed fine. So the rod is really struggling to go through the plastic thing. It goes through so far but then really gets stuck. I tried a bit of fairy but that didn’t help. I tried to force it through but it made the screw holding in the plastic guide pop through the frame by a thread. Any ideas what’s occurring? I’ve attached a pic of the plastic guide.
