What items/pipes to buy to connect underneath sink to sink waste (after removal of waste compactor)?

Hi everybody

I want to remove a very old, broken waste compactor from under our kitchen sink.  It is old, smelly, and broken.  It was installed over 15 years ago.  It uses Electricity and pumps waste food into the sink waste which I don't like on both counts seeing as we have a food recycle bin that uses no electricity.  Basically, it has to go.  Please would you guys have a look at the attached photos...

1 Image shows the sink from above.  The small sink on the right is what is connected to the Waste Compactor underneath (Arrow A).
Another image shows the Waste Compactor from under the sink.  You can see that the waste compactor is connected to the underneath of the small sink (Where I have arrowed 'A') and joins the waste where I have arrowed 'B'.  I want to do away with this whole contraption and simply connect the small sink to the waste (Arrow 'B').  I did a bit of a scout around this morning but some of the imperial sizes and descriptions baffle me so I am stuck as to what I need to buy.  I have attached a 3rd image showing a squiggly Blue line describing how I want the wastewater to simply flow out of the small sink into the main sink waste.
I would be grateful if you guys would suggest what items I need to buy to achieve what I want to do.
Thanks

  • You need a 'basket strainer waste' which is like the one in the other bowl. This will almost certainly be the standard 3.5" diameter (09mm) but check.

Once this is fitted, you then need to basically replicate what's happening on the other bowl - the waste pipe needs to go via a 'trap' or U-bend, unless it's going to share the one already there. Tbh, I cannot work out your plumbing from that angle! Any chance of some side-on shots?

I removed one a year ago. My order history seems to suggest that I bought:

    https://www.toolstation.com/mcalpine-straight-connector/p77517

    https://www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-flexcon2-flexible-connector-white-40-x-460mm/43713

My memory isn't great for the job. It was a bit fiddly though working it out.

  • You'll need a female threaded fitting to connect to the waste - which is what you get with traps.
Waiting for the OP to reveal the rest of their undersink plumbing first, tho'...

I think I bought the Flexcon first. When he gave it me he said "You do realise that is metric?". So then I bought the little connector which is 40mm to 1 1/2 inch. Maybe there is a better flexcon. Mine works fine but it was trickier than most plumbing jobs I have done. 1 1/2 inch is 38mm so you don't normally have fittings so close in size. Maybe I shouldn't have gone metric at all. Maybe ignore me. There might be a much better way.

Thanks for the assistance guys.  Jeepers...For some reason the image won't upload this morning...I think it may be something to do with the new antivirus package i installed 2 days ago...but that's another matter.  Maybe I didn't make myself clear...All I want to do is do away with the contraption which means I just want to connect 'A' to the nearest waste.

Jeepers, yes, it looks like I need one of thos basket strainer waste contraptions.  Are they standard size?

    Thanks
  • Yes, they are mostly standard - like the one I linked to. Some sink makes have their own sizes, tho', so best to remove the grinder, and take the fixing ring with you to Wickes or B&Q (or a friendly Screwfix).
Yes, I understand what it is you are trying to do, but I cannot figure out what your plumbing is doing! Where does the outlet from trap B go?!
