Halifax credit card cheques

Hi,

I accrued a huge amount debt by using Halifax credit card cheques, in addition to using Halifax personal loans and overdrafts, to the tune of around £60,000.

I have been suffering with psychiatric disorders and PTSD, for years as a result of sexual abuse as a student in the 1970's finally the abuser was jailed aged 83 in 2017 and my diagnosis was given by a leading psychiatrist post 2017+

I used the credit card cheques like monopoly money and was never ever challenged by the Halifax, I kept up with the repayments but got deeper into debt. Remortgaging twice to pay off the credit card borrowing, again, authorised by the Halifax just pushed me further into debt.

Now, I should have paid off my mortgage, but still have another 5 years left.

Can I make a claim for compensation from the Halifax for its lack of care, allowing me to use the credit card cheques and balance transfers, I have easily paid over £ 5000.00 in current account overdraft fees, I still have the £6850.00 agreed /arranged overdraft on my current account. I'm not using it, but I kept it to show how it had reached a stifling amount, my interest alone was around £95+ per month for over 5+yrs on my account and also on my partners account.

Has Martin Lewis advised about this issue previously? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you for reading.

I am sincerely sorry for your horrible past, but did you make Halifax fully aware of your condition at the time you were borrowing?
  • Hi,

If I had had the presence of mind to tell anyone about my behaviour at the time things might have been different....
  • It does not take away the fact that the Halifax and other card providers were pushing the credit card cheques onto me for being a good credit worthy customer!!

Somewhat loaded language there.  They offered them to you, you accepted them and used them,.  They didn't "push" them on you.

Your psychological condition is largely irrelevant to this.  Nobody who you dealt with at Halifax would be or would be expected to be trained in spotting psychological disorders so you can hardly fault them for that.
