I was struck by the blurb in the voting stuff for one of the directors seeking election, 'What makes me the right person?"
She says first that she likes the idea of building societies, and "Being a woman and from a different country, I add diversity"
Does that make someone "the right person", simply being 'diverse'? My neighbour has both of those qualities, as well as being atheist and vegan. Perhaps she is more qualified and should have put her name forward? Does being in one half of the population make someone 'diverse'?
Personally I'd rather the Board appoint someone who is best for the job, regardless of their 'diversity' credentials, and tell us why they are best for it with respect to the needs of the job only. She may well be, but why bother to tell me that she is a woman and not from England? Neither am I lol.

I should say that I vote against all directors in these votes solely because of the "quick vote" option they all have.
I commend you for reading the blurb! Diversity can make someone the right person if they are also suitably qualified in my opinion. This existing committee chair has 30 years of experience in the industry home and abroad, chartered accountant and has done similar work at this level for 11 years. Whether that makes her the right person is for members to decide I guess.
Although we all know these votes are tick box exercises in reality - I'd love to see just one where someone says "I'm straight out of GCSEs, never worked before and my hobbies leave me no time for real work". I suspect they'd still get over 90% approval votes!1 -
I always read the blurb, stems from my days as a carpetbagger, and yes I read of 30 years "experience"
I just couldn't care less what sex she is or what country she's from, and didn't see how that was relevant or helped to "make her the right person", as you say just ticking the boxes.
If she keeps the rate high on my RS Locals account then I'm happy lol0 -

Thankfully this forum is an example of somewhere people help (and sometimes hinder) others without the need to have a quota or view on what demographic each other are in.
