Is it reasonable to request to change the day rent is paid?

I live in a rental building owned by a large corporation.   I have to pay my rent on 7th of each month (this date doesn’t coincide with the day of the month I actually moved in).  Would it be a reasonable thing to ask if I could move rent day from the 7th to the 14th to coincide with the day my salary’s paid in?  Obviously I’d need to pay them the 7 days extra rent to move the pay date from the 7th to the 14th.

Does this sound like a reasonable thing to ask or not?

Of course it is a reasonable thing to suggest. The worst they can say is no.

When I got my new job, I changed every SO & DD (including my mortgage) to leave a couple of days after my pay day.

If they say no (which they may if they request all on 7th) maybe look to open a new bank account for your rent to go in and out of so you don't have to worry about when it's taken.

It leaves your bank when you want it to and they take it 3 weeks later (or whenever)

    Why not just ask them?

I'm seeking feedback as to whether this is even a reasonable thing to ask as I don't want to look like a deadbeat

Why does it matter whether you "look like a deadbeat"? It's just business for them.

I've done it before with a letting agency, wasn't an issue. I like all my routine expenses to go out within a few days of payday.

It's a reasonable thing to ask about. Just say "It would help me to budget better if the payment date could be changed to 14th of the month."  Having a second current account would effectively need you pay your rent nearly four weeks early, but I recommend that everyone has a current account with another bank in case anything happens with their primary account. It's useful to have a second debt/ATM/contactless card for payments, and allows more creative forms of budgeting.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • I did it for a tenant, she paid 10 days rent to get to the new date and then started to pay normally.  Didn't make any difference to me an helped a single mum so don't know why I wouldn't.  Might be different for a large organisation if they want all rents on the same date but it can't hurt to ask.
  • Agree with all the above.
Out of interest, what date did your tenancy start (date you 'moved in' is irrelevant as might be diferent)? What happened regarding rent between tenancy start date and the 7th?
Any idea why rent date was set fo 7th?

They're hardly going to evict you for asking....the worst that can happen is that they say 'no'.
Expect them to charge you an admin fee for this though.
