I don't think the nursery can claim the government funding for a child not attending the nursery, so it's reasonable that funding is withdrawn.  Looking at it from their point of view, they are being held hostage because they won't be paid for the hours your child is absent, yet they'll have to keep the space open for him when they could accept a paying child instead.
    Thank you
I note the funding was not withdrawn during the very first lockdown
Should the funding be withdrawn, would we be able to reapply?
How would you or others suggest the best way to manage this as there appears to be no good solution?

I'd continue sending him to nursery.

Why don't you want to send him to nursery?

The first lockdown was different, I believe.  Different rules applied.
I think you can reapply, yes.
Personally, I'd continue taking him to nursery.  Why do you not want to?
  • So nurseries receive their funding dependent who is attending on census day - the Govt haven't confimed if remote provision counts as attending but if the nursery is open they won't be offering remote provision. So,yes the nursery is right as they won't receive funding for your child if they're not there. As an aside if other local nurseries are closing but yours is open you may find no place available to apply for when you are ready.

If you have a household member who is shielding then the nursery may be able to be a bit more flexible but ultimately nurseries are currently fighting for survival so they have to be firm on this, with no funding there is no nursery.

The reason for not sending them to nursery is the same reason schools have closed, ie that there is a risk of spreading coronavirus
I realise the government hasn't closed nurseries, but it understandably questionable seeing as they have closed schools, which despite the age difference, are practically the same
  • So if the child isn’t at nursery then who will be looking after him/her/them ??

If you are working from home can you realistically be working effectively whilst looking after a toddler as well ??

Tough choices to be made for sure but they are ones that you as a parent need to make and shoulder the burden of - not others
  • To be fair the evidence for spread/infection is much weaker in the 0-4 age groups. And even primary isn't that high, it's secondary schools where it's really rocketed

    What evidence is that?
A virus has no brain or decision making capacity, it would not distinguish between age when infecting a host
