Do most or all car/van rental places require at least 2 years old driving licence?

Sorry, might be a wrong forum for this, not sure. Just want to know if that’s an universal requirement or are there providers who’d be cool with a one year old UK driving license(no points, plenty of driving experience in case that makes any difference)?

Thanks :)

  • Let’s take this as an example: https://recruitment.afs.delivery/job/8c065f88-a04c-4e11-b58d-d973c5ec2a74

Says they provide new, fully insured and tracked vehicles and only require 1 year+ driving experience . But they rent vans from Arnold Clark, will Arnold Clark be cool with anything less than 2 years of driving experience? I’m  sceptical.
  • I have to do some work while I’m building up my personal trainer/nutritionist business, and driving seemed like a good enough option. It’s just that my driving licence is just 13-14 months old and from what I’ve heard most if not all car rental / insurance companies won’t rent anything to me.

That would proper suck. I can’t go back to car factory assembly line type job, no way. I mean, I could, and deal with suicidal thoughts day after day - that is no way to leave life imo. And god bless the guys that choose to do that for a living, capitalism wouldn’t work without them. It’s just not for me. My mother says my arms grow straight from my !!!!!!(common saying in Russian language when referring to someone who’s utterly useless at manual/labour work).

Sorry, TMI perhaps. If someone could answer the question in my first post, that’d be great.

From experience most do want 2 years, you will have to start phoning round to find out for sure. Smaller local rentals may be more accommodating

It's the insurance position which is the main issue. You refer to a UK driving licence  and having lots of driving experience, which suggests you might have held a non-UK licence before? Other big issue is your age (again, for insurance purposes).
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I did hold EU license since age 18 which I have misplaced few years ago. Instead of going through the trouble of getting a replacement, I just went though the whole process of getting a a new one last year(I didn’t drive for a couple of years plus my employer at a time offered to pay for the whole thing). So technically I’ve got an 11month old UK license even though I’ve been driving for over a decade on and off.

    I’m 34 years old.

Age is certainly in your favour. Do you still have the number of your EU licence? If so, quoting that and explaining the background might work - has to be worth a go if you can't find anyone who doesn't insist on the 2 year bit.

Nope, I do not have the number of the EU licence unfortunately.

How realistic do you think that someone would rent me a van / insurance with my one year old UK licence?

I was hopeful and so applied for 3 jobs, they had me do 3 drug&alcohol tests this week. Now I’m sceptical. The company I feel best about said they’ll call next week when it’s time for me to pick up a van. They urgently need drivers

I’m confused. Is this a useless exercise and I’ll get rejected by the car rental / insurance company every time?

It's impossible to say. As advised above, your best bet is to call the firms on your shortlist and ask. Far more likely with a small local independent than the nationals, who will simply have a blanket policy, and no discretion.
Why can you not reapply for a replacement for your original licence from your home country?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Surely it's easier to go through the "trouble" of getting a replacement EU licence? Looks like you are hiding something if you went through the pain of a UK test because that doesn't sound easier than a few phone calls.

Yes, yes I am. I mean I was. Lost my EU licence years ago for dui(not in UK). I’ve been clean and sober for over a year now though. Don’t think this kind of honesty work work well with employers... I have been sacked before with words ‘appreciate the honesty, but we’ve got to let you go now’.
