I found three savings books - how can I check if they have anything in the accounts

I was tidying up and found three old passbooks - Halifax Building Society, Newcastle Building Society and Northern Rock Building Society. How can I check if the balances shown in the passbooks really exists and how can I get my dosh?

Yes they are in my name but at old addresses. The Newcastle Building Society and the Northern Rock no longer exist.
