Previous cancelled insurance

Around 10 years ago I had two insurances cancelled.
One was car insurance where I missed a payment (at the time I had changed providers forgot to cancel then ignored their contacts because I was rubbish at stuff like that at the time).
One was contents insurance ... the reason for this was because I was making a claim that they were investigating. I tried to make a payment over the phone but was unable to due to the investigation (which was upheld...there was no suspicion just standard for lost jewellery which I had replaced by them).
Both were just one months missed payments.
Ever since I have always declared cancelled insurances when checking for new insurance but this leads to increased premiums and less options for insurance.
What I wondered at this point is do I need to declare these as cancelled? When they ask do they mean cancelled for any reason or for fraud or other dodgy reasons? And not just non payment (both instances one month not the full years premium).
Thank you for any insight!

Unfortunately you do and most insurers want to know if you've ever had insurance cancelled. Some will be more lenient once they know its for non-payment rather than fraud (though may not offer you credit terms) but others will simply blanket decline.1

Thank you for replying! I thought that would be the case...unfortunately they don't ask the reason in comparison sites! My car insurance is ok but I want to check my home insurance.
I presume this is it for all insurances for life now!0 -
Certainly all personal lines general insurance (home, car, pet etc)... sometimes protection insurance (life, income protection, critical illness etc) are less concerned about whats happened on your general insurance if it isnt fraud and sometimes it won't cross over into business insurance. I have had special terms applied on my business insurance and my personal lines insurers have never cared once discussed.1

Dont use a comparison site then.
Many insurers that do ask for detail will not penalise you based on what you have said. So, in your case, it may well be in your interests to use direct providers or a broker.
One was car insurance where I missed a payment (at the time I had changed providers forgot to cancel then ignored their contacts because I was rubbish at stuff like that at the time). We only have one sentence from you here but this does not look like a cancellation as it reads as if you changed insurers and forgot to tell the old one and this lead to payment issues. As long as the new insurance didn't get cancelled then that should not be an issue and not declarable.
