Does anybody know what currency you have to use to pay the fee required at the airport on entry. with going AI and not needing much spending money will we get by with just taking sterling.

I have been a copule of times to the DR and the best currency to take is US Dollars to pay the departure tax at the airport. It is also accepted in shops etc over there. You just are given any change in the local currency.
Hope this helps.0 -
yes take some us dollars, rate is so favourable at the moment you may want to make purchases outside the hotel and dollar currency is widely accepted, def change a few dollar to take, escape the hotel, take a boat trip and go for dinner elsewhere one night, the buffet will drive you crazy......0
