Bank will not allow partial transfer of debt to allow me to accept 12 months 0% interest

I had a Credit card with a bank. After helping someone homeless, the individual left me with large debts.
As a result of my choosing to help the person, my wife and children  decamped and I have been alone for almost 10 years. This resulted in the bank declining to renew the card some time back. So I just chugged on paying the debt.
Getting back on my feet and have reduced Credit card debt, both its size and the limit. Have been offered 0% balance transfer from another car provider but needed details from the card associated with the old account to process this.
Spoke to bank who despite telling me the account, " is not in arrears ", were unable/unwilling to assist.
Accept bank would not want to issue me with a card, [don't want one anyway], but find it galling that I cannot utilise this offer to repay part of the debt I still owe to the bank and save myself money.
Seems iniquitous Martin !
Greedy unscrupulous .......
Should just give in and seek an IVA.

  • IMO Your original card debt has been closed off to their Collections or a third party debt collection service.
There is no more a 'card number' associated with your debt.
Again IMO the best way forward is for you to get a figure that they would accept as a full and final settlement - apply for a card with a money transfer option - get the money paid into your bank account then pay the debt off from there.
  • Aye, you are probably right.
Just that when you are in this position, applying for cards is 'challenging' and obviously with a poor track record you don't get anything without a penalty.
Thank you for the advice though.
    Cheers

I am confused by your statement that you have reduced your limit... from what you say your card has been cancelled and as such you have no limit.

You could look at a "super balance transfer" credit card which gives a 0% transfer for monies moved to your bank account that you could then use to pay towards the former credit card debt but these tend to have a lower acceptance rate. Alternatively you could look at a loan instead which won't be interest free but may be lower interest than you are currently paying.

It sounds like you have already applied for a card in which case your chances of being accepted for another product have been diminished
