Marriage Allow deductions

Writing on behalf of my folks, who applied for the allowance and were told they were getting a good amount back. They got their cheque and were half of it went to admin and vat, is this normal?

If they paid admin & VAT then it sounds like they may have used a third party to make the claim.

HMRC don't charge admin or VAT as it's part of their statutory duties.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

They probably lodged a claim through Marriage Allowance Claims Ltd but thought they were dealing with HMRC and got stung.
1st lesson - always know exactly who you're dealing with
2nd lesson- always read the small print

I think you must be mistaken, perhaps you saw a dodgy advert claiming to be written by Martin Lewis.
