Student/carers/IS

Hi,
Please forgive me if I have asked this before I am not sure if I have.
Anyway, DH works and we have 5 children one with special needs, which we get DLA and carers for. If I go to uni as a full-time student and change the carers allowance into DH name, he will be at home with the sproglets, will we be able to claim IS? If so can we claim help with our mortgage?

Thanks

It would depend on whether you had an income as a student.

Would it not be better to study part time?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I'm pretty sure if you study full time you cant get IS?....I may be wrong though!

He can claim carers instead of you, but there will be another 5 week wait. Yes he wil be able to claim IS, but there will be no help with the mortgage for 9 months also as I student I don't think he will be able to claim IS for you.

Normally if you are in receipt of carers and are on IS you only have to wait 8 weeks to claim mortgage payment. Ahhh so I'm just as confused!
I understand that this is going to be a very complicated case....

  • Hi , i'm 37 and a carer for my mum who is badly with osteo and rhumatoid athritis also numerous other , mobility/breathing related ailments .I start an access course this September ( 2011 ), although the threshold to still be able to claim carers allowance is 21 hours study per week , my course is only 18 hours but is described by the college as Full Time . When I aren't at school I will be taking care of my mum but if I am no longer entitled to carers allowance and income support could anyone tell me what I would be entitled to ? Also , if it turns out that I can still claim , as my income support goes straight to the gas and electric company , I'm only in receipt of 55 pounds per week , the 30 pound maintenance grant has been scrapped for 1st year students , does anyone know of any help I could get towards books and travel . B.T.W , I have worked solidly for the last 20 years and am just hoping that now i'm in this position , their is some kind of help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Sorry if i've posted this in answer to someone , I couldn't see a link for me to post independently.

I'm pretty sure that the linking for housing costs extends to both members of a claim - though never having worked in a mortgage section I cant be sure about that.
  • Have you asked the college welfare service for advice?
