Discretionary housing payment

I’m in a small 2 bed top floor social housing flat but am about to move into a 3 bed private rented house. I’ve tried to do home swaps but had no luck. The rent for this new house is obviously a lot higher and is more than my local housing allowance. Is it likely I would be able to claim some discretionary housing payment to help with the rent or would I have needed more of a need?

It seems unlikely that your local authority will support you to pay higher rent because you chose to move into a bigger and more expensive property unless there is a very strong reason why your previous property was unsuitable.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Also if you're currently claiming housing benefit and you're moving to a different local council, you will need to claim Universal Credit. Unless you're claiming a servere disabiliity premium in another benefit.

    Number of dependants?
    • All land is owned. If you are not on yours, you are on someone else's
    • When on someone else's be it a road, a pavement, a right of way or a property there are rules. Don't assume there are none.
    • "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere

If a severelydisabled person had been living at a larger property for over 10 years  and had their bills and rent paid for them on their behalf for that time, but then the charity disbanded and a private landlord took over the property. Do you think the discretionary payments have a good chance of covering more rent? thanks.

This thread was posted just over 2 years ago and the OP hasn't returned since just after posting. It would have been better to start your own thread with your question.
In this situation there's more chance of succeeding with the DHP but it's only paid for a short period of time before they will need to reapply. The DHP will not cover any extra bills they need to pay, only the rent part will be considered.
