I need to transfer US shares to my name from joint. It needs a notary to witness my signature on an affidavit of non residence and there are 2 other forms that have to be signed in the presence of a solicitor.

What is a fair fee for this. I have been quoted £240 + vat
The last signature I had witness was a lot less (but didn't have to be a notary)

Sounds about right, but you could always ring round for other quotes.

I paid a Notary £100 plus VAT back in 2013 for witnessing my signature - she explained that her costs were based on what she had to pay and the amount of time it had taken to achieve her qualification.  That made sense to me.  Perhaps ring round to ascertain if that is the going rate in your area.

Wow... I paid £15 for a notary to witness an affidavit. There was a bit of discussion on if the affidavit need a review, which would have been vastly more expensive, but after it was agreed that it didnt it was the fixed fee they said.  

There are various factors that can push the price up but I'd be shopping around for a better price or at least to validate its the going rate

You will still need to do the paperwork but if I was you I would sell rather than transfer, as you will have the ongoing issue of receiving dividends in $ (usually paid by check) and will have to jump through more hoops when you come to sell them at some point in the future.

Last time I needed this was in 2020 for a lease. The cost was £50 at a local solicitor.

Notary public is a different qualification than solicitor, and they charge much more. Because they can. £300 for a couple of signatures and getting an apostille attached, when I last needed to get fleeced.
