Car insurance limited mileage

Hi my son is 17, has his car and we purchased the insurance in March. He has 5000 miles he can use for the year but once the corona virus hit I became shielded. I’ve not been able to go out and do my own shopping etc. So my son has used his car more than usual to do my jobs.
Anyone any experience or advice , if we approach the insurance company would they extend the mileage allowance at all? It’s all unprecedented so I just don’t know!
He’s used a thousand miles in 2 months just running about for me and my elderly, vulnerable mother. He’s been kind and is happy to do this but I’m worried it’s going to be detrimental for him.
Id appreciate any ideas. Thanks

Only the insurer can answer the question.  He is still only averaging 500 miles per month, so not far above the figure he would need for 5k miles per year.

Check with his insurer but generally insurance companies are making allowances for changes in driving habits due to corona virus. This includes things such as additional mileage due to not being able to use public transport and using the car for business.

As mentioned, he won't be far above it anyway and on a normal policy the annual mileage is a bit of an estimate so 1000 miles here or there makes no odds. However, if he has a black box fitted this is an absolute limit so he would have to pay for an additional block of miles which can be expensive unless the insurers have agreed to waive it due to Covid.

This is not unprecendented, insurance companies make mid term changes to policies all the time.

What does his policy paperwork say about changes in circumstances?

On my policy I simply go online, make the changes and the premium is adjusted.
