Re:- Online training courses

Hi there,
I have recently been made redundant and I know there are not many jobs about to apply for but when they do start appearing, I would like to do some online training to improve my chances of getting something.   I have done some basic accounts work but mainly have administration/office experience.  I wanted to do AAT accounting at one point but that was expensive and didn't have the funds to pay for it.
I have looked at Reed employment website - there are some training courses, a lot of which are free, but I don't want to spend the time doing a course, if it's not going to be recognised anywhere.
Can someone advise me please where to start?  Thank you.

Where you start rather depends on where you want to end up. Precious few free online courses provide you with any sort of 'recognised' qualification, but may still be well worth doing to demonstrate you are capable of the discipline to complete any sort of training at home and, of course, have increased your basic skills. Qualifications are great, but the ability to actually do the job is far more important.

You might like to look at https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5960710/the-great-free-online-courses-hunt-updated-february-2019 and see if anything there appeals.

Hi Dox, sorry to hear you e been made Redundant. I’m lucky enough to currently be on furlough with 80% pay. I’m in hospitality admin payroll etc.  Even when we are back open we’re not sure if we’ll have jobs or not, just don’t know how Long it will take hospitality to get to half way normal.  I am doing the same as you and doing course online.  As you mentioned admin basic accounts. Why not have a look here at Sage UK they are offering accounts and payroll for free at the moment. Worth a look as Sage is really popular with businesses so would be good.  You do get a certificate you can download too.
    https://www.sage.com/en-gb/shop/traininglanding.aspx
Also found these online too. I haven’t used these ones but have used Sage ones.

Hope this helps and good luck to you. :-)

@set It was me that's been made redundant.  I got put on Furlough and then as soon as the minimum 3 weeks had passed, they sent out letters saying they were making redundancies and a week later I got another letter saying I had been chosen. They used the Furlough scheme as a way of hiding behind it.  If it hadn't have happened now it would've been another time, as I worked with a colleague who was a bully and pulled all the management strings and she wanted me out.  This has really knocked my confidence as she was just vile.  I am applying for jobs, but it really scares me and it normally doesn't bother me.
Anyway, thank you for posting the details of courses.  I have signed up for Sage as I know a lot of employers use this and am now going to look for an Excel course, as I know the basics, but there are some advanced things that employers expect but I have no clue about. My last job was accounts but they didn't use Sage, they used bespoke software administered by OGL.

Can anyone recommend a (preferably free) online refresher course for Microsoft Excel please?

  • I believe you can do free courses through Microsoft themselves online so have a look there.
