My 6 year old 17" i5 powered Asus X75VC had an accident and fell down the stairs - the screen has cracked and it will no longer boot up
I am looking for a high spec replacement - it must be a 17" - but there are very very few 17" devices made nowadays
Preferably at least an i5 / i7 with 32Gb RAM - I can transfer the 1Tb SSD from the Asus
Any suggestions ?

Out of interest, why do you say you want 32 GB of RAM for a Windows 10 laptop?
Unless you doing something really memory intensive, most people can work quite happily with 8 GB of RAM, possibly 16 GB if they feel flush...

Bear in mind the OP keeps their laptops for 6+ years at a time. I definitely wouldn't be buying 8GB of RAM with that in mind (I often get close to 8GB with normal usage now (I'm at 7 right now and I'm just browsing!). 16GB might be enough though - although personally I easily exceed this too if I'm editing my video streams down.

It also depends if it's easily upgradeable or not. If its not I'd be getting 32GB - running out of RAM kills performance so bad that it doesn't seem worth the risk- running out of RAM is basically the end for performance.

You're at 7Gb memory usage and you're just browsing?  How many tabs do you have open?  I have five and I'm only using 840Mb.

Total system usage, not just for Chrome! Chrome is using about 1.5gb currently with about 13 tabs going.

If your whole system is only using 840mb we are doing something very differently!

Perhaps you rarely turn off your PC and allow your RAM usage to build up over time.

I've had this laptop for over twelve years, running Windows 10 Pro on 4GB and never reaching the limit of my RAM.
    John_Gray is right.
One rarely runs out of RAM in everyday usage. With an SSD fitted, you would be unlikely to notice a performance hit regardless.

SSDs are not designed to be random access. If you run out of RAM you will see a big performance hit.

Windows scales down it’s usage depending on how much is installed, but it will run more quickly if you install more. If you installed 8gb you’d find that at idle windows uses about 3.5gb and runs a lot faster.

Yes, I was just about to say, if your browser's using 7Gb then we have a problem...
I can beat it anyway, currently total system at 6.3Gb :)
