Insurance policy cancelled

Hi,
I am with 1st central and they have now cancelled my policy on no grounds. I called them last Tuesday to change the car on my policy (was thinking of buying one i've seen) they then said it would cost 'x' amount so I said i'd call back if I bought the vehicle. I then got an email saying that since I've told them I've sold my current car that my policy will be cancelled within 7 days If I didnt pay the amount the said (£200.00). I then called to say I haven't sold the car yet, and I haven't bought a new one, they said that's fine and not to worry.
I got an email this morning stating that my policy has been cancelled, I immediately called them and they said because I've sold my current car that it has been cancelled. I informed them before today that I haven't sold the car. I have been passed pillar to post with them as they are apparently trying to get my policy reinstated (I paid in full).
My question here is can they just cancel a policy fully paid just as they like?
What are my rights as I have a car sitting outside that is currently uninsured.
If the policy is cancelled will i have to inform this to new insurance companies when getting insurance out in the future?

So have the insurers agreed that they made a mistake, and that they are going to correct it?
If so, just wait for them to sort it out. If they take too long, complain.
But if they don't agree that they've made a mistake - make sure they've listened to the recordings of your phone calls. (Tell them dates, times, your phone number etc.)
If they still say they haven't made a mistake (i.e. they've listened to the phone calls and they say that you said you sold your car and got a new one etc), it will get a bit messy to resolve.

Most people I believe do that on purchase of new car?
So they gave you a price for the new car policy, but you said you would call them back?
Was the £200 extra for insuring the new car? They can cancel the policy if you do not pay the extra for the new car.
Regardless? your insurance company appear to be accommodating you by reinstating the policy on your old car.
Just wait until they reinstate the policy on your old car. If no satisfaction then go through the written complaints procedure.

I will still be writing a complaint as this seems complete incompetence from the company themselves.0
