Trip to USA

My wife and I booked a trip in January 2020 to visit relatives in the USA in September 2020. I am 74 and have angina (i.e. high risk group). In the present climate I don't believe we'll be in a position to make this trip. American Airlines, who we booked our flight with, have said on their web site that they will accept re-arranged flight dates. However, our relatives, who live between the USA and the UK, might well be back in this country ASAP and not be available to host us in the States.
I don't want to jeopordize any discussions with AA by raising this issue directly with them as I have heard that if I cancel my non-refundable tickets then I will forfeit any refund that may be available.
Additionally, I have contacted my travel health insurance company who have informed me that if I cancel my insurance before the flight date (which I obviously would do if I don't take the flight) then I am only entitled to a 50% refund, less a £15 admin fee.
I realise that companies need to earn money but taking 50% of a policy fee when the policy is not even current seems a bit steep, to say the least.
Sorry to drone on but I suppose what I am looking for is some advice from some of you knowledgeable people on here as to what my best options are. My ideal scenario would be to get a full refund on all my outstanding payments but I appreciate that may not be possible.

Hi bellator,
If you a bought non refundable flight tickets and have paid for them in full there is not much you are do at this time.
The flight may or may not happen is September. If you cancel it you lose the money if they do you should get it back
How you paid for the flight can be important.
In regards to your health insurance I wouldn't cancel it, you might need it.
If your travel insurance covers you if you can't travel because of ill heath, then if a Dr advises again travel you will be able to claim
Also the Government advice in Sept will also come into play.
New User name as MSE gave me a number in my old one.
