Furlough letter confusion

Hi
I have just been furloughed. My employer discussed this with me on the phone and I was informed I would receive 100% of my pay inclusive of my car allowance, my employer would top up and I would not be affected financially. I was obviously disappointed to not be contributing to the business but pleased I would not be out of pocket.
I received my agreement letter and the wording was very clear “we will pay you 100% of your pay during furlough”. I duly signed and returned.
I later asked the question, after signing, to confirm that my car allowance was included, as this was agreed in the phone call. Our FD then backtracked and told me he was wrong and that i will actually receive 100% of my salary not my total pay and that the letter was incorrect.
I duly explained that I signed the letter in good faith based on the call and language in the letter, on the understanding I was getting topped up to 100% total Pay not total salary. My car allowance equates to over 10% of my net monthly income.
Ultimately after lots of heated conversations my employer has agreed to include my car allowance due to fact my car loan and costs etc are still coming out. I have agreed to also take any company wide pay cut if it comes to that but not on top of loosing my car allowance. Don’t get me wrong I am incredibly great full as my wife is self employed in the hospitality industry so already we are under financial pressure.

I would be interested to get peoples thoughts on this in terms of the agreement letter that I signed and Total Pay vs Salary.
Regards

"Pay" is an imprecise term. Legislation tends to use the words "earnings" or "emoluments". Be glad you got the right result.1
