Pretty sure the answer is no however...

Just wondering where we stand with our insurance policy refund?

Holiday was cancelled due to covid-19. Insurance wouldn't cover the holiday as they don't cover pandemic but Virgin refunded the holiday. As the travel insurance can't be used and the travel isn't happening do we just lose the money we paid for the insurance?

I asked about holding it on file and when we re book we give them the new holiday details but they refused and said we only had a 7 day cooling off period to cancel so we will lose it.

It's lost , if single trip it only covers the period of the holiday

Browntoa is correct.  You've probably used the policy because you were covered from the moment you took it out.  If you had had to cancel for other reasons (illness, death in the family, etc) then the policy would have covered you.

    Thanks both
  • I got my insurance refunded by AIG as Emirates had cancelled my flights and agreed a "hold my ticket"
Phoned AIG and I said I would not make any claim, they agreed a full refund.
No other losses involved as I was going back to my second home in Thailand.
Insurance was purchased 19 Feb for travel on 20 April, for an 85 day trip.
    You can only ask !
  • Hi, Paid £706 for insurance for trip to USA. I'm 80, wife 75. Flight cancelled (BA brilliant refunded within 7 days) Phoned insurance company and requested refund. They offered me £193. That made them £513 for doing nothing. Is that right.? If it is, the insurance companies are going to make a fortune over the next few months. Not very happy.  Jack Holman

Travel Insurance does not just cover you for the time you are away.

A travel insurance policy has cancellation benefits from the time you buy the policy.  So you have had the benefit of the cover - even if you have not had to claim.  It comes down to the T&C's of the insurer, whether they allow refunds, how they calculate the pro-rata, if they charge an admin fee etc.

As above.  If you cancel your annual car insurance after six months and no claim, you don't get the whole amount back.  You wouldn't even get half back.  You'd get a refund on a scale set out in the policy documents and often with an administrative charge added.

They are wrong with the 7 days,  it's 14 days.

    You were right to ask.
It goes to show that you shouldn't trust any information  from insurance companies without checking
