Hi all,

Hoping someone might be able to help.

My nephew has asked me to get him a laptop so he can do his schoolwork what with this virus going around.  He has a tablet but the tablet won't let him use Adobe Acrobat.  Where am I best looking at something for him?  The cheapest one that can be delivered by CurrysPCWorld and AO is about £350 - there are cheaper options but everything is out of stock.  If we are wanting something brand new, are there any other options?  Also, would it say somewhere on the specs as to whether Adobe Acrobat would be compatible with it or not?

I think the idea was that his Mum was going to pay for it but when I told them the rough price, he's gone all quiet.  Would it be possible to get something brand new cheaper given the current situation?

My initial idea was to get him something from CurrysPCWorld as I have 19 x £10 gift cards (from doing surveys at Consumer Pulse) but I've been told by CurrysPCWorld that I can only use 5 x gift cards online.  The only other option would be to go instore and have the 19 x £10 transferred onto one gift card which I could use online but all their stores are now closed.  Hmmm.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help, and hope everyone is keeping safe.

  • Try CEX online for a used one. They come with a 2 year warranty. I paid £215 for mine which would have cost over double that brand new for the spec. I've had it now for over a year without any issues.
When I have had to use their warranty with other stuff I've found their customer service to be excellent.

Acrobat is just one of may programs that can read .pdf files
Has he tried to get a different pdf reader for his tablet (what make/model is it?), probable cost would be £0 ... more MSE ;)

I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad 13 about three years ago, and have been very pleased with the performance. They are available secondhand on eBay for about £250.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

To be clear , when you say he needs to use acrobat , are you talking about the full feature version of this, that allows you to create pdf files etc ? Because if so , then that itsself will likely cost as much as if not more than the budget you have for the laptop !!

If you mean (as is more likely) that he needs to be able to view pdf files (as you would with the acrobat reader) , then this need not be a criteria atall, as many many programs can open and display pdf files. Tons of them are available for tablets and are free

    Hi all.

ANDYPIX - I have no idea.  I know that before the lockdown happened, he used to come here to do his maths homework because he couldn't do it on his tablet.  Now he has a set amount of work to do each day and he can't do it without the acrobat thing.  I know what the acrobat thing is but I can't explain it to him on the telephone and both his parents are not tech savvy.  I know what you mean about the free software, I have LibreOffice on my laptop.

I ended up buying him one for £300.  It was a HP one from CurrysPCWorld.  He's told me he can do his maths homework on it now, so I guess that's good.  I've told him he is not getting any birthday money from me for a good few years, lol.

Hope you are all keeping well, take care and stay safe.
