Google maps pulls in data from numerous souces inc local traffice reports. I use it daily but as others have mentioned it can't factor in local factors. Garmin needs updating frequently but can still fail to recognise new routes. Something to do with officialdom I think.
  • Uxb1 - you said something which reminded me about something i'm not keen on with Google Maps & Waze though something i've never actually encountered with a standalone sat nav.

I know i am certainly going to be in the minority here and probably a minority of 1 but such is life. There's been plenty of times where i'll be driving along and say i need to take a left turn, which is indicated on the screen. Thing is, there's a load of left turns coming up. It looks like it's telling me to take that left turn that's 100 yards up the road, right after this left turn i'm about to ..........

oh sh**, that was the left turn it wanted me to take. Didn't look like that on the screen though. lol

Why are you looking at the screen? Turn when it says Turn now.

Yes I've sometimes taken the wrong exit on big roundabouts for the same reason

This is odd as my wife has said exactly the same thing about me.

Would be nice if it "said" turn now in good time before you actually met the turning and not when it was too late because if i did it when it "said" turn now all the time then some times i'd be turning in to a kerb or a hedge or a wall or whatever.

Again like i said, it isn't all the time or even most times, but it happens.

Google maps will tell you how far from you are from the turning.  Look at the distance it is showing on the screen.  I must confess, I have a tendency to turn off too soon.

Sat nav's or mobile phone app's are fine as aids but no one in their right mind should turn or make a maneuver simply because a device suggests it.

I was kind enough to think that the majority of posters had a modicum of common sense....Also, I made the assumption that most people would know how to use a SatNav.
It's obvious, now, from this thread that it's not always the case.  ;)
