Deposit refund

Hello

I seriously need your help on how to go about my situation

Towards mid February this year I paid a deposit of £1500 to a travel agency so that I could secure 4 tickets (myself & my 3 boys) to go visit my parents in Africa this coming July.

I was given till 24th April to clear the remaining balance (£1700) otherwise I might lose the deposit.

Now due to the pandemic and not sure if in July life would have gone back to normal, I am so reluctant and afraid of clearing the balance before 24th April.

I contacted the travel agency last week and their response was this: “As per now your tickets are confirmed if this pandemic situation continues and you paid in full for the ticket you will liable for full compensation as per airlines “

Honestly speaking, at this present moment I do not wish to travel no more. My financial circumstances have been affected & I’m going through tough times with my family so I rather keep my money & get back the deposit.

Please your advice would be much appreciated on how I can go about this...

Thanks

I suspect if you don't pay the balance you will have effectively cancelled and therefore lose your £1500 deposit.

The agent is correct. If you pay the balance and the flights are cancelled, you would be entitled (under current rules) to a refund.
  • I have received a refund from Jet2 for a package holiday (travel was March) but only received the balance I paid.  I have not got back the £120 deposit I paid in October (£60 x 2).  Has anyone else had this problem and is the deposit refundable.  Thanks
  • I have paid £1200 deposit to TUI but I can’t get through to them . I don’t want to pay the balance of over £4000 as I know we can’t go. I’m not travelling on an aeroplane in August as too risky now. How can I claim back my deposit?

    (Catch 22) Holiday Malta 18 Aug 2020
I have booked my flight with Air Malta for the whole family paid £2600, they say that flight are not cancelled only on hold, yet the CEO of Air Malta stated that all flights are cancelled indefinitely. They told me to wait until 15 July 2020 for announcements on my flights. So then we have the Villa booking, I have paid the deposit and the balance is due 19 June 2020 if I don't pay the £2400 then technically I've cancelled, if I do pay and then Air Malta say no flights then the Villa company have my money and will only offer to move the booking to 2021 (they already sent an email saying so) I have to pay and extra charges. I don't know what will happen next year, I may not have a business anymore, I may not want to go to Malta, I just want my money back, but its a catch 22, if I pay then I'm more out of pocket if I don't pay then I lose my deposit for a pandemic that not my fault. I now read that spain and others are saying you will need to take 14 quarantine and if we then fly back to UK we have to do the same. So as far as I can see Holiday 2020 not going to happen. Now I paid all this on my Credit Card so should be covered by Section 75, but try getting through to them. impossible, so it an online form but as My Airline has not cancelled nor the villa company then I am not covered  (https://yourcommunity.tescobank.com/t5/COVID-19-updates/Travel-and-holiday-disruption/ta-p/33021) cut & paste see what they say. Any one got any ideas?
    Thanks

Update ; I gave my holiday villa company the option of 50/50 refund on the deposit as Covid-19 was not my fault or theirs, they offered to re-shedule to 2021, offer a hire car and so on ; I issued a CCJ with the option for mediation, well we had mediation and they settled on 50/50 without legal cost which I was happy with ; they could have done this months ago but like most big companies they think they can stamp all over us. Hold strong if you feel/think you right then go for it.

You didn't issue a CCJ, you issued a CC Claim.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • They'll have paid you off to save the hassle of court, you weren't entitled to a refund from what I can see. But good result nontheless!
  • Tui/Marella Cruise Refund - we were due to go on a cruise 16 May 2020, we didn't claim refund at the time it was cancelled due to the extra 20% they were offering towards a later holiday but have now decided to cancel. The online 'Claim a refund' form will only accept dates for holidays starting today or later. Please help.
