NHS ill health pension

Hi, I applied for my NHS pension on ill health grounds, I was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy in 2016 and have had multiple periods of hospitalization due to heart failure since then - it is a lifelong illness and will further deteriorate over time. My heart function is at 30%, below the 41% threshold for heart failure and well below the expected 55% for a man my age (42).
I was employed as a paramedic and made adjustments around my condition moving from front line 999 work into the control room and as things deteriorated I moved away from shift work altogether and worked for 4 days a week in a GP surgery - sadly even this couldnt manage it properly and i ended up absent for long periods and hospitalized again with heart failure, i am now unemployed and claming ESA having been assessed by a DR from the DWP.
I applied for the NHS pension on Tier-1 grounds which states i should be unable to continue working in my current NHS job (paramedic), there is a more serious category (Tier-2) where the applicant can no longer do any work of any kind ever again - this doesnt apply to me as a i hope in the future to be able to undertake part time work in a different industry that is less stressful on my heart.
The initial application has been rejected and the letter seems to fixate on stating that i will be able to do some work of regular employment of 'like duration' - firstly i doubt i will ever be in full time employment again and secondly this seems to be on the NHSBSA website as grounds for rejecting a Tier-2 application and my application is clearly for Tier-1 as being that i cant work as a Paramedic any more.
My GP and Cardiologist have supported me in this application, I have written back asking them to reconsider and setting out my reasons for thinking their decision is incorrect.
Does anybody have any expereince of the appeal procedure, using the ombudsman or even involving solicitors and the courts in order to access their pension on ill health grounds?

Many thanks.
