Travel Insurance - Who Claims When One Family Member Paid for Everyone?

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I did a search and couldn't find anything similar:
We are a family of 8 (mum/dad, brother/his wife/their 2 kids, me and my partner) with travel plans in May 2020 from the UK to the USA.  Everyone has their own annual travel insurance policies.  My dad (kindly!) paid for the entire holiday for everyone, so my question is, in the event that something stops us travelling and we have to cancel our plans, and we have to claim on our travel insurance - would it be one claim (my dad would claim it all back as he's the only one that's paid anything), or would it be a case of each person claiming their portion?  Thanks in advance.

I would think that if the travel restrictions imposed by the US government are still in place when your journey begins the airline should return your money as they will not be flying out to USA

    I'm interested in this too.
Without knowing the details of what your dad has booked, I'd say you should be looking for a refund in the first instance without looking at an insurance claim.
It's also possible that if your dad booked a flight/hotel package it may be ATOL protected like a package holiday. This happened to me last week with the Flybe liquidation.
We have flights booked for June which will probably be cancelled. I'm assuming if/when it happens then the person (my friend) who booked the flights will get the full refund back onto her card. She'll then refund me the money I gave her.
Of course if the flight goes then I'll be on it.
  • Thanks for your responses.  If the travel restrictions are still in place, we will take the refund option, but, I am still curious about this situation for future holidays, or if we can't get a refund, for example.  We booked the flights/car hire together to get ATOL protection, but booked accommodation, excursions etc. ourselves so it's not a total package holiday in that sense.  In our case we haven't given my dad the money after he booked it, he's literally paying for all of us as a sort of gift, so in that case I am still unsure as to whether he makes one claim for everything (as he's technically the only one who will have suffered any financial loss)  or whether we would all still need to claim individually.  Fingers crossed we all just get to go on holiday without any complications - we'll certainly need one by then!
  • Sorry to gatecrash this thread but I have a similar query on this topic as below, so an answer to cover both of these would be appreciated:-

I live in my own property and have an annual travel policy.

My partner of 5 years and her daughter live at a different address and also have their own annual policy (Not with the same insurance company)

Each year I book flights and hotels for us as a party of 3 and pay for these on my credit card.

We split the cost of the holiday 50/50, so my partner gives me 50% of the cost of which I then pay off on my credit card.

If any of our trips were cancelled how would we go about getting a full refund and which travel insurer would we have to contact for this.

I would presume the one that the holiday was paid on
