What happens if UK decides to/from ban flights to Europe?

If in the next phase of UK handling of the Coronavirus it is decided to ban flights to/from Europe, what happens to people stuck abroad on holiday/business? Would airlines be forced to repatreate those whom they took out with return tickets? Or is it tough luck and hope you have understood all the caveats in the T&Cs of your travel insurance.

You could try to get to Calais and get back by ferry.0

That ship (or ferry from Calais) has well and truly sailed already.0

Well, people have been able to get back from Northern Italy by air even though there is a lockdown so perhaps this is just hysteria?0

The scientists in the UK have continually said that travel bans do not work so this scenario is very unlikely to happen. If it does and the government take the decision, I would ex[ect them to make arrangements. If you are travelling soon make sure you have the FCO helpline number in your address book on your phone1

As much as I dislike our current leaders, they are not as stupid as Trump, so a pointless blanket travel ban is highly unlikely.1

Many thanks for your responses and following recent address to the nation from Boris Johnson I have decided to go on holiday to Tenerife. However, I will be eating my dog first and wearing it's face on the plane and smearing myself in Vic.
I shall not return until Morgan Freeman is elected president of the USA or Bruce Willis is in orbit.
.... I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and think....we visit these forums to pick peoples brains and ideas. Full disclosure, I'm off to Tenerife on Saturday and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, whilst washing my hands and coughing in my sleeve..... actually I don't have a dog, but it is a good fit...0 -
