    A little more info please?

Have you booked an ATOL protected holiday with a main stream tour operator?

Were previous payments made on a credit card?

A simple answer to your question is that paying by cheque (once it is cleared) offers no consumer protection.

I'm interested in which company the OP has booked this holiday with too.

You still use cheques?  Welcome to the 2020's.
PS I love that spell check on here is trying to get me to change cheques to squelches.

Why is the OP "not sure" about a bank transfer yet is quite happy to cut the other company a cheque? Baffling.

Which company is it that wants a bank transfer? Surely they accept cards?

I booked a holiday at Wakatobi Dive Resort in Indonesia and payment was required in USD by bank transfer to a Swiss company, no credit cards accepted (except for expenses incurred out there).  No problems though - and the holiday was fabulous!

Totally irrelevant sidenote - the spell check is built into the browser, and isn't a forum feature.
I've also not used a cheque for some time; I received one from American Express for a S75 claim and could pay it in via my phone! The future is crazy... :)
