Pension help for my dad

All the facts- reached state pension age Nay 2016, still working full time but wants to retire at end of school year so July 2020

Logged on to HMRC and it states 24 full ni contribution years and 23 non full tax years as he worked abroad in the 70’s and 80’s.

When we go to state pension forecast - it just states that he has reached state pension age may 2016 but doesn’t give figures i.e how much or what he has to do to fill in gap years if he can.

Any advice or assistance on what to do now would be very much appreciated

  • Has he not had correspondence from DWP asking what he wanted to do when he reached SP age? I am due mine from March 6 2020 and received a letter Nov/Dec asking what I wanted to do with all the info. If he is not taking it then it has probably been deferred.

He could try phoning them, they are usually helpful.
  • He says he hasn’t had any correspondence at all and yes will ring up.

Is there any way of calculating how much he should receive

Has he not had correspondence from DWP asking what he wanted to do when he reached SP age?

The OP's father reached SPA four years ago - one would have expected him to have received an invitation to claim at that stage but it is possible that he didn't.

At all events, he didn't claim so his pension is now in deferment.

He might want to check the situation regarding his employment abroad and pension entitlement?

You mentioned HMRC but have you checked on the gov.uk site for State Pension? HMRC is probably not the right site. You can sign up on gov.uk to get the SP quote. I think he just falls into the new scheme from 2016.

Crossed posts with xylophone, who is always a help in these situations I’d do what they suggest.

Do they have the correct address for him? They can be several addresses 'behind' as any pensions administrator who has used the DWP tracing service will be only too aware!
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

The SP forecast system only works for people who have not yet reached SP age. If you havem to get info you should ring DWP pensions claim people. see https://www.gov.uk/contact-pension-service. If you get a multiple choice message I believe it's the claim a pension number.
