Might help someone :-)

Okay so I have been on my DMP for a month now, and that has highlighted how much I was reliant on credit and juggling debts.

Anyway, it has prompted me to make renewed efforts to reduce my monthly outgoings.

One of my biggest expenses is my mobile bill. I have four lines (me, wife and two kids).

Anyway, consequently the bill was quite high.

Now, while it took some effort and numerous calls I spoke to my network EE about my issues.

Ultimately, without a reduction in service, they have reduced my bill by 50 per cent for 6 months.

That equates to over £400 for me.

Just something worth considering for those is a similar position.

    Hi,

£200 a month on mobiles is a tad excessive, you may still be in contract, i dont know, but PAYG sim only deals can be had for as little as £8 per month, £10 per month gets you unlimited calls/texts and 6 gb data with giff gaff.

As its pay and go, theres no credit check either.

  • https://www.giffgaff.com/help/articles/inclusive-and-non-inclusive-calls-texts-and-services It's still worth looking around. giffgaff offer free calls and texts to other giffgaff customers, so if all of your family have giffgaff sim cards it won't cost you a massive amount to call and text each other. It'll cost you £10+ a month, so further savings.

I read it that the £400 saving was over the six months but the sentiment remains the same

Works out at around £132 per month full price.

  • Appreciate there are sim only deals, which is what I will move to in 9 months time when the contracts end. The figures weren’t to motivation behind the thread, more advice that it’s worth asking your present contracted provider for help
  • Well done in getting the reduction on your phones. It just goes to show if you dont ask you dont get. Its always worth a cheeky phonecall to try your luck.

  • This site is so so helpful and I appreciate all the advice but I always wonder why people act as if it’s easy and free to get out of a 24 month contract mid way through?
  • Well done Fusterclucker - and yes - you have nothing to lose by asking, and may well stand to gain!

Nobody does as far as I'm aware. We always say to people to diarise for when their contract ends to make a change to SIM only - although sometimes with the rider that if you are inside 3 months of your contract end it is worth an early call threatening to leave at the termination date as often this leads to an early exit as long as you stay with the provider for your SIM only plan.

It's not free and easy to get out of a contract but anyone can take a leaf out of Fusterclucker's book and negotiate a lower tariff/package whilst still in contract. Too many times do we see SOA where people are in lots of debt whilst paying stupid money for mobile phones and Sky TV. If people in that situation can do a bit of negotiating whilst still in contract their debt free date will come even sooner.
  • Thanks for that :-)

Sky is the one bone of contention in the house.

We do pay too much for this, but as a family of four we do use it.

We have our phone, broadband and tv through them. We will be going onto sky sim only phone contracts. Indeed, one of our four has moved as of yesterday and another will be switched in February.

I am mindful the amount we pay to them in our present predicament looks excessive (over £100 per months). Yes I do watch sport, yes we do watch movies.

I am already on a reduced tariff negotiated when i renewed my contract with them.

I am however going to try my hand tomorrow and see if i can get it any cheaper .
