I’ll heath retirement.

My partner had a opted out of serps pension with the coop now royal London. He has enquired about I’ll health early retirement and they said it’s a short form and signed by his doctor. His he had extreme anxiety stress and depression and now rheumatoid arthritis.
He also has a civil service pension of many years, if royal London say yes does mean that civil service should follow suite or can they play hardball and say no. He is early 50’s

Thanks

Each scheme has its own rules. For the civil service scheme, will also depend on what section he is in (or left in), in particular Classic or one of the newer ones (Premium/Nuvos/Alpha).

As the previous answer points out, all schemes have their own rules - and that particularly applies to meeting the criteria in relation to ill health retirement from a particular scheme. He needs to contact the administrators for the Civil Service pension scheme to which he belongs (contact info will be on the paperwork he has, or go to https://www.civilservicepensionscheme.org.uk) to check the criteria he needs to satisfy.

Also there will likely be a fundamental difference between the two schemes, RL will almost certainly just be a lump sum of money they can hand over, that in anyway will be due in say 3 or 4 years time, the CS is a scheme aimed at paying so much a month from most likely 60 or 65, eg much later away than RL can pay out (age 55).

Even if RL had said no would have no bearing on CS, but CS will always be much more stringent because of the differences. Usually its when death is due within 12 months not 'just' ill health.
    Good luck.
