Issue with my plumber

Hi,

I need some advice please.

New bathroom installation, should be been completed whilst we where away on holiday. 6 weeks later, and I've had to stop the bathroom fitter/plumber from doing any more works, on the grounds of safety.
He has agreed to cover the costs of some of the mess he was left (took the bottom of a door with a jigsaw, so replacement door needed!), but wont accept any responsibility for the unsafe works (told me that he shower was in a usable state, but on closer inspection in has no supporting arms fitted for the glass panels, which we later found in bin bag in the garden).

We have had some legal advise, which advised us to get quotations in for all remedial and sundries, take the cost of what he thinks we owe him, and just pay him.

The plumber has since invoiced us for nearly £2000 which he believes we owe him, including extra days works and more materials.

What should i do now? Should i acknowledge receipt if the invoice and state that its in dispute?

I have offered him a settlement of what we believe is a fair price and to cover all costs to get the bathroom so its fits for purpose which he has rejected. I'm not too worried about going to small claims, as the workman ship is beyond poor, not a screw or fixing in site, and everything is held together with Sealant (and yes, his guy was actually recommended).

I'm just mindful that his extortionate invoice states that payment should be made in 30 days or further charges will be added. Should i formally advise him that we dispute it?

thanks

If it ever goes to court, you'll need to show that you've acted in a reasonable manner. Just not paying a bill looks bad. But if you do send a letter, keep it short and to the point, not a long rambling rant.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Yes, we have had to get a quotation from numerous trades (Plumber, Joiner and now an electrician, as well as waste removal for what he left in the drive) and quotation have come in for more than he sum we previously allow for, so if i pay him, i will be paying him less than what i first offered him.

Who said waste removal was included? It's a licensed activity.

Also, how do you know your quotes are reasonable if you've only got one?

All Waste removal was included original Quotation, it quite clearly states this.

Going back to my original question in this post – should I formally advise him that we dispute the costs?

I'm not talking about his quote - you accepted that.

I'm asking how you know that the quote you have had for each trade to claim against his cost are fair.

You're missing my point. You've only had one quote from each trade - so you can't possibly determine whether those quotes are reasonable.

Quotations from numerous trades, doesn’t mean one quotation, it means quotations.
If you can’t respond with anything constructive regarding the next step regarding an invoice then please don’t comment at all.

Don't take any notice of Risteard he's from Londonderry and never posts anything that helps. He's the same on other forums too.
