Pay query - school job

With it being the summer holidays it’s hard to get this answered by my new employer for another couple of weeks.

I’m due to start a new role on the 27th August whereby although I only work term time I still get paid equally over 12 months. My thoughts are that although I will have worked 4 days in August I won’t receive anything until the end of September due to payroll cut off times etc (I will clarify this when I can speak to the business manager, I can’t find anything in my paperwork) I’m expecting this so it’s not going to be an unexpected surprise or anything just wondered if anyone else has been in this situation and could advise.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi - I used to work as a Business Manager in a school. You are correct - in my school we waited until someone had actually started to add them to payroll, and with payroll cutoff dates (assuming you will be paid at the end of the month - your offer/contract should tell you the payroll date) it will be too late for August.

    Enjoy your new job!

Have you provided the new employer with all your bank details yet?
If not, I would suggest you have next to no chance of receiving anything on Friday if you will only be joining them on Tuesday.

As above post by mrs_slapshot, many employers don't collect these details and set up payroll until you actually turn up on day 1 - you'll be surprised how many people never turn up to a confirmed/acknowledged job offer. If they set you up in advance, then they probably wouldn't be able to stop that payment if you don't turn up.

Expect to be paid the 4 days in your September pay. :)

I wouldn’t expect an extra 4 days in September.

Your pay is already adjusted in order to give you 12 paydays. You should have 12 equal paydays regardless of your working pattern that month.

Thanks all, I did provide my bank details etc back at the end of June when filling out my new starter paperwork.

I totally understand that nothing would have been set up prior just in case, still find it shocking that people just don’t turn up for their first day at work with no prior notice (obviously there could be exceptional circumstances but more likely than not)

    Once again thank you
  • From my experience, and as you have stated, you will be paid 12 equal amounts over 12 months. This will start on the pay day that falls in September.

I would agree, but given OP has worked a few days in August that weren’t paid at the end of August, I would expect those few days pay to be added to the September payment.

    Again this is unlikely.

The OP is on a salary. They work over term time but the pay is split over the full 12 months to allow for the holidays. There will be a set monthly salary over the 12 pay periods which will total her full yearly salary.

She would only get extra in September if the August working days were over and above her normal salaried working hours for the year.

If she decides to leave after this year, she will not have to work at all in August but will get a final salary payment in August.
