How difficult is it to build onto a wall?

Hi everyone. I'd like to build the existing wall at the front of our house, and the wall dividing between us & next door, up to about gate height. I wouldn't attempt to build a wall from scratch myself, but I'm wondering how doable it is if you're already starting with some of the wall built? Can anybody estimate general costs for doing it yourself (i.e. materials etc) vs approximate quote from a professional? Thanks so much!

As a new user I can't post a link to the image but if you were to visit ibb.co/0F3KKyR you'd see what I mean!

Not without some useful information like dimensions. But if you click the link https://www.jewson.co.uk/working-with-you/for-self-builders/preliminary-planning/calculators/brick-calculators/

you can work it out for yourself when you know what you want to build.

Word to the wise, bricklaying is like plastering, everyone thinks they can do a job like a pro if they take a bit of time. After a bit of time they realise why people pay the pros! It's not impossible but it is going to be harder than you think
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

Bricklaying is probably a bit easier to do to an acceptable standard than plastering is, but I agree it certainly isn't as easy as it looks.
  • Thanks both :)

    1. That's about doubling the height - are the foundations of the existing wall suitable?

    2. Are there any legal restrictions on heights of walls/fences such as a restrictive covenant in the deeds?

    3. Does it need to be a wall? Could be cheaper/easier/quicker to put up some trellis or screening on top of the wall

You can go to 1 meter at the front without planning, keep the step. You will also need to clean the top so it sticks on.

The is a plastic tool called a bricky that makes it easy to lay brick level.

Its important that you mach the brick well or it will look odd.

Yeah, my neighbour thought building a brick wall was a doddle, he armed himself with one of those and I think the wall lasted about 4 months before it was falling apart :rotfl:

I made a brick BBQ and it looked pretty good; took me about 10 times as long as a professional. Actually that's probably an understatement.

I think that's what the OP should be doing. A brick BBQ is a good way to cut your teeth, especially as it wont be seen from the outside ;)
