Work won't pay me for hosp appt as cancelled 5 times

My employer pays for hospital appts and dental appointments if fillings, tooth extractions, crowns fitted and any other work that requires anesthetic.

One of the hospital departments that I am under - though not seen anyone yet, my appointment has been cancelled 5 times now - through no fault of my own. I give them plenty of warning as a small team. Manager said to me that because its the 5th letter I have given him, I will not get paid for my appt. I find this totally unfair and every time I get a postponement letter, I always ring the department and never get anything earlier. The appointment is now 2nd week Oct when it was originally 3rd week May.

Work wants us to have hospital appointment letters as soon as we get them,

Did you actually take the time off for the cancelled appointments. If so, it seems fair enough.

Is there a question in there somewhere?
When your appointment was cancelled did you go in to work, or have you had the time off, the previous 4 times?
Is the time off a goodwill gesture, or in your contract/staff handbook. You need to check exactly what it says.

I think paying for the time 4 times is more than most employers would do. Appreciate its not your fault but its not their problem either.

All of the dates of the appointments were postponed 3-6 weeks before the appointment and never had the day paid. For example, I should have seen the consultant on 5th Sept but now its 10th Oct. I have/will attend work as per normal if appointment fell on during my shift. No time as been paid for the appointment

Out of the four cancelled appointment dates - 3 fell during my shift and one fell 1 hour before, but it takes 1 hour back to work after leaving the hospital so I would have started 1.5-3 hours later (depending on how on time the appointments are)

If the dates/times have changed and you worked as normal then you need to discuss this point as you have yet to take a paid appointment.

If they are just fed up having to change the rota/cover then that is not related to the paid time.

If you know your rota it may be possible to get the appointment moved to when you are not working so don't need to imform work.

I'm confused. You can take paid time off work to attend hospital appointments. You've had five cancelled appointments so you've worked on those days but you haven't been paid for those days you've actually worked.

You get 3 - 6 weeks notice of cancellation from the hospital, so you've worked those days of the cancelled appointments, but not been paid(?).

If you've actually worked those days I can't see what your employer's problem is.

    What am I missing?

EDIT: when you say appointments are "paid for", you do mean that your employer gives you paid time off work to attend the appointment? You're not talking about consultation fees re private health cover?

This hospital department is difficult to change appointments, I would only change it if I was on actual holiday or recovering from major surgery done on a different part of the body to what this department does.

For example, I had surgery on my eye and couldn't tolerate much light for 5 days

In reply to Manxman - I get paid time off to attend hospital appointments

It's still not clear what happened on those earlier cancelled appointments. Did you work as normal and get paid as normal, or did you take the time off anyway and got paid as normal?
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

OP - you d not make sense with your explanations. At all.

The 4 cancelled appointments - were they only cancelled when you already arrived at the hospital or were you notified about the cancellations in advance?

If they were only cancelled when you already arrived in the hospital so you already taken time off to attend - I understand.

But if they were cancelled in advance and you could have gone to work on those 4 occasions then your post does not make sense.
  • So, you get notified of a hospital appointment and you arrange with your employer to take paid time off work to attend.

The hospital then cancels/rearranges the appointment giving you 3 - 6 weeks notice, you advise your employer of the cancellation and tell them you are now available to work that day. But they won't (or will not in future) allow you to work and get paid for that work?

Again, do you work the days of the cancelled appointments, or do you still take the time off?
