We went to Lake Garda in August and it was baking, I remember having to wait till about 11pm to have a shower to avoid getting all sweaty before bed! This was in a static caravan with no a/c. Great holiday, but not if you don't like it too hot.

Austria, Normandy and Porto, Portugal are my damn favourite places to visit in any season. Rome could also be a good option.

    Might be rather hot.

In August the Canaries will be cooler than most of the Med. One of the attractions of the islands is that the weather there is pretty much the same year around.

The water is safe to drink but will taste different as it is desalinated so most people prefer bottled water.

The Canaries will also be relatively cheap in August as their peaks season doesn't kickoff until around September. In Jun-Aug, most people prefer to go to the Med.

Another option would be northern Spain (Bilbao, Santander and along the coast). It will be cooler than the Med coast and is quieter too and cheaper than the Italian lakes but it is helpful to know some Spanish as the area is less used to British visitors.

If you look at the temperatures some parts of Europe has experienced in the last few weeks, it seems there's no such thing as an average. That includes parts of Brittany and Normandy You might be safer in early June
  • Many thanks everyone, for your helpful replies. You are really generous with your advice and time. And so polite; I wish that was the case for all forums!

We decided on ... Paris! Yes, very left field for “not hot” and “beaches”, but it turns out that that’s where everyone wants to go after all, and they really hadn’t showed their hands clearly enough before!
