My credit card issuers have been contacting me recently about the requirement to verify online transactions with a code which they will send to me by text message. That seems OK. However, can I take it that if I am somewhere without phone reception, but using wifi (as I was recently), I can forget about buying anything online?

Some banks also offer to do it by landline - they quote a code online and you tap the code into your phone on the automated call. (Lloyds/Halifax). Santander give you the option to logon to online banking instead. Which credit card company are we talking about?

You can get around this by using a wifi-calling ready handset which only requires a wifi signal to send/receive calls & texts. All of the major networks now support wifi calling, though not sure about all MVNOs.

Edit: beaten to it by !!! :)

Halifax. But if I'm in a cafe somewhere I can't really ask the owners if they mind if my bank phones them on their landline to speak to me.

I don't think my phone has this. It's a Sony Xperia XZ Premium. If I search for wi-fi calling in settings nothing is found.

It doesn't work like that. It has to be a landline registered in advance. eg home landline.

However, I've checked Halifax page and it says the following:
    Changes to shopping online
When checking out purchases over a certain amount, you’ll notice the extra security during payment. The payment screen will ask you to verify yourself. You can do this through your:

App: You’ll get a push notification asking you to verify your purchase.
Mobile: We’ll text a passcode to your mobile phone, which you then enter on the payment screen.
Landline: This will be an automated call to your landline, asking you to say a code which comes up on the payment screen.

So if you have wifi, I imagine you could receive a push notification from Halifax via wifi, so looks like you're good.
