Has anyone moved south from north for a job?

Hi,
I’m really in a pickle!
I work in the NHS in a role where I am bored and getting external tired working shifts and nights. I’m 47 btw.
I have tried a long time to escape and there is nothing up north that I could go into. I have been offered a few jobs south but turned them down due to the cost of moving. Another job (same role I was successful for last year) has come up in the south east and I’d really like it but having cold feet again.
Yes, it would give me better working hours and weekends back plus a bit of a salary increase (good potential to move up though), but I have two kids up here 15 and 11. Hubby too but I’m not too happy in my marriage so was thinking of relocating myself to see what happens. But, the cost of housing down there frightens me. We own outright a four bed detached house and it’s worth £230k up north but a lots more down south!
Has anyone ever moved south for work and kept their property up north? I’m looking for inspiration! I get free travel from London to the north east btw. We also own another property in trust.
I definitely need to sort my job out but my marriage is also causing me problems...I am very unsettled!!!

  • PS. I’d get a relocation package but I’m thinking of renting a flat just for me and travelling home for 3 days a week.

Given this would likely be the end of your marriage, and you'd be away from your kids for the majority of the week - is that something you would be ok with?

Well yes, lots of people do it. But probably not with the complications you have.

You need to figure out whether it's right for you and other people's experiences really won't be that useful. Some people like living out of a suitcase and being away from their families, others not so much.

It really does depend where in the SE you are thinking of going, I think. For instance, if you need to work in London, you do not necessarily have to live there. There is a huge commuter belt available which stretches further than many consider, given existing transport links, never mind this HS2 rubbish.

You do sound as if you are at a crossroads in your life and I hope you find the right way for you. It sounds as if you have some money behind you but you are right; the cost of property anywhere south and especially in the SE has almost no bearing on that in the north (Believe me, I know!)

You are unhappy in your marriage; if that is not something you can or want to fix then moving on is probably something you should consider. Please, however, do so in the cold light of day and do not make decisions which affect yourself and your family for the rest of your lives in haste.

    I wish you good fortune.

I did, I moved from the North East to London and then never went back.

I do have a family home in Newcastle, but rent it out nowadays.

The increased wage in my case was quite a bit more than was needed to make up for the increased costs.

The negatives are mainly around being so far from my family.

I won't bore you with the details but our move in the opposite direction was not of our choice. Suffice to say, you cannot buy a building plot where I'm from for what our 3 bed semi in this area costs.

Don't want to be alarmist but do suggest you consider your options carefully. There is plenty of information out there and on here and I reiterate, please do what is right for you.
