Is it a bad sign to not get a interview response on the day they said it would be given?

Hey everyone, I recently had an interview from last Wedneday and the recruiter had told me to expect a response for the Friday of this week (basically yesterday). However, I had not received a response at all on whether my application has been considered further. Is this a bad sign?

I don't want to get my hopes up, but is it fair to presume that the recruiter may need a little extra time to decide on which candidates would be suited for the role?

Could be any one of a number reasons :-

They havent got the right people together yet to sign it off
    HR are dragging their heels
They've a preferred candidate they are negotiating with
They're preparing your Dear John letter

    Hopefully not the latter two!

Gives you an opening to ring on Monday or Tuesday with a "just following up to see if there had been a decision made on the job role"

In my experience a lot of interview decisions are delayed, it's very unprofessional but not necessarily a bad sign.
  • They normally decide pretty quickly.

I attended a recuitment night (which was going to be two stage) I enjoyed myself but to many applicants turned up so an unsuccessful email turned up next morning.

In 2017 I turned up at a courier firm two months after interview (I ended up the temp alongside the perm candidate so never say never!)

I've chased after job interviews but now I think leave well alone.

The recruiter might have expected a response by Friday but that doesn't necessarily mean that the employer has the same timescale for their decision-making.

Well, at least it can mean they didn't reject you outright; however, they may well be interviewing another candidate and so waiting on that.

I've had some where you just don't hear anything at all.

I had my interview with both the employer that specialises in IT and the HR Administrator. I would assume that they would have the same timescale in mind for making a decision

They last told me that they would be busy interviewing other candidates on the Thursday of that week. The fact they said Friday was the date where a final decision would be made, leads me to believe that they were already done with interviewing everybody and that they had plans to make the decision straight away.

I interview staff in my company and always make the decision the same day or the day after at the latest if there are several candidates. But the delay in offering to the candidate can be significant. This is normally because HR have to get sign off from a director and then they’re busy or someone is on annual leave so I am often chasing them a week later asking if they’ve offered the candidate . So don’t lose all hope yet.

The current company I work for took 5 weeks to offer me the job and by that point I’d given up hope. Unusual to be this long but you just can’t predict it if you don’t hear. However if you haven’t heard in another week it would be worth dropping them an email.

As others have said, there are a million and one reasons why either a decision is not made on the expected date, or people are not informed on the planned date. Make no assumptions as to what the reason is.
If you were told to expect a decision by yesterday, I would wait until Tuesday and contact them in the afternoon if you hear nothing.
  • Sometimes it can't be helped: a fire alarm, the IT system goes down, someone has a family emergency. Getting the results out are as important to the company as they are to you - time is money - so don't worry.
