Hi Guys,
I have a company car at the moment and i heard that the rules are different regarding company car tax if the job cant be done without the car (Im an engineer and i have to travel to sites over large distances for my job). I have a feeling this is incorrect but was hoping to cut down on the tax paid so worth asking.
Any truth in this?

Only true if you have absolutely no personal use. Do you collect/ drop off the car from your employer's premises every day - or is it kept at your home and available to you for private use, which would include your drive to work?0 -

Who did you hear it from them and why aren't you asking them about this rather than randoms on the internet.
Helpful randoms though
It is availablity of the car which matters, not it's use.0 -

Just a wild guess. The OP doubts the accuracy of what he has been told so decided to ask the question on a forum which claims to give advice on employment matters.
Obviously a stupid thing to do!0 -

To be fair guys, i was told of this information and had my suspicions, i thought i would reach out and ask on this forum as i would probably get more sense. Thought it might be a friendly place to get advice....
Anyways, from some of the responses i can see that this doesnt apply to me as i keep the car at all times and i'm able to use it for personal travel. The reason why i was asking is that im being forced into a car that will cost more in tax, so was looking to see if there was a way to reduce the tax.
Thanks.0 -
The simplest way would be to give back the company car.
Alternatively get a good understanding of how company car benefit is calculated (manufacturers list price of the vehicle and emissions are often key but not the only thing which matter) and get a more tax efficient vehicle when it is time to change vehicles.0 -
From next year you'll pay no company car tax On electric vehicles. Might be an option.0
