China work visa?

My son is working in China. This is his second year and the company have sorted out his work visa after first year so he can stay a second year. Is there a limit on how long he can keep doing this? I had an idea it was 5 years maximum but cannot find anything to back this up. Would be glad if anyone has any experience with this?
Also what happens if he changes job? Does he have to start from scratch with the visa application process?

I would expect that China, like most countries, issues a variety of different visas. The conditions regarding the duration, transferabilty between employers and the maximum length of time it can be held will be dependent on the type of visa he holds.

He had a work visa (Z visa) at the beginning and after a few weeks his employer got him a residence permit.

There’s no limit if sponsored by an employer. My friend did 17 years in China.
