Group Income Protection Insurance (employer)

I have income protection insurance provided by my employer, I believe this is called Group Income Protection insurance, covering me and anyone in my company irrespective of any pre-existing illnesses/family history etc, it is covered.

In the event I was to become sick and absent from work with an illness causing me to become disabled or mentally impaired to never allow a return to my role or the company, would the income protection continue paying till retirement age?

The policy documents state the payouts would continue till a return to work or retirement age. But surely an employer can eventually sack/terminate someone if they are long term sick for the rest of their life and then this protection would end?

and you would lose your benefits when you leave the company as well?

Might be a good idea to get your own policy independently on terms you want. Maybe a top up in case the company goes bust or withdraws the policy for example

My point I wanted to get to was that income protection from an employer is only good so long as the employer has the good grace to maintain you as a member of the company.

For example, long term sick for over 12 months and doctors all state maybe you will never return to work, eventually the employer will run out of patience even though they are effectively just the middle person paying the cash to you they receive from the insurer?
